Program: October Lab

October Lab

The October Lab is a two week residency for collectives, bands or other collaborative artist teams working in visual art, music or writing. It is intended to provide a space to further a specific project, develop a new one, or simply brainstorm and discuss. As part of the condition of the Lab, participants are required to propose a project for the following Wassaic Project Summer Programing, to be executed during Last Saturdays and/or as part of the annual Festival.

We accept proposals for the October Lab on an invitational basis only. Artists will be selected based on the quality of their work, commitment to their practice, and ability to interact positively with the community at large. We can accommodate collectives of up to 6 people.

The residency takes place during the fist 2 weeks of October.

You and your cohorts will receive an adaptable raw studio space in the historic livestock barn. Groups will have 24 hour access to their studio and accommodations which include private bedrooms, shared living room / study, dining room, kitchen, and bath. Artists also have access to workshop facilities as well as the potential for expansion of workshop space and the possibility of working outside. The residency’s workshop facilities include a wood shop and a silkscreen studio.

Residents are required to bring everything they need for their creative practice. Each studio is provided with a table, chair and limited lighting. We do not provide any art materials.

For Performing Artists and Musicians, there is the additional venue of The Lantern Inn, if  you would like to organize an event or show during your stay here.

The silk screen studio is located in Luther Barn, alongside our summer studios. The silkscreen shop is open to residents during the months of May through October. During these months residents have 24 hour access to the shop.

Our Print Fellow holds a mandatory shop orientation at the beginning of every month, and is available throughout your stay for print-related questions. For more information about our silk screen studio GO HERE!

Residents have 24 hour access to the residency wood shop, located in Luther Barn. Our wood/metal shop is fully stocked and our sculpture fellows are available by appointment to help with small projects. For a full list of what tools we have please email

Depending on the length of your stay, Residents are invited to sign up for one-on-one studio visits with creative professionals. To see a list of our past visitors HERE!

All artists are invited to participate in a monthly evening of artist’s talks and presentations. See past resident work HERE!

SPOOKY WASSAIC - Spooky Wassaic is a community-wide event featuring two haunted houses (one for children and one for older audiences), a hay-ride, costume contest, open studios, and a DJ and dance party at the Lantern Inn to close the night. Artists are welcome to participate in the Haunted Mill! You will be provided a space (or an entire floor!) of Maxon Mill to create a chilling installation for the night!!

Artists are asked to be available on the last Saturday of every month to participate in open-studios.

Additionally, all residents are given priority when applying the Wassaic Project Summer Exhibition.

Residents may bring their dog. Dogs require an in-person interview and an additional monthly impact fee of $100 per month. You cannot bring your cat.  (too many allergies)

In an effort to serve and support emerging artists, all of the residencies offered are subsidized. The value of the October residency is $2,250  – including studio space, residential space, as well as extensive programming, performance and exhibition opportunities. Thanks to our continued support from our donors and grants, the October Lab is offered for free on the condition that they provide programming for the following summer.  However, residents are asked to pay a $500 security deposit, regardless of length of stay, which will be returned, pending damages, at the end of your stay.

Residents will pay their security deposit upon signing their artist contract.
